Light Fabrics with a Rich History: Tulle and Veil

Lightness with Character

Tulle and veil fabrics are widely known for their airy texture and soft light diffusion. They bring elegance and delicacy to any space without overwhelming it. But behind their graceful appearance lies a fascinating history — from ancient traditions and royal courts to contemporary interior design.

Veil: A Symbol of Mystery and Status

The word veil comes from French and originally meant a cover or drape. Early references date back to the ancient Middle East, where veils were worn as a sign of social status and modesty. In Europe, veils also carried symbolic meaning: white for weddings, black for mourning.
By the early 20th century, the veil became a fashion accessory. Small veiled hats — known as veilettes — became a symbol of stylish and independent women.

Tulle: A French Invention with a Royal Story

Tulle is a fine mesh fabric, named after the French town of Tulle. According to legend, before the wedding of King Henry VI and Marguerite de Valois, the bride requested to attend the ceremony unrecognized. In response, the king issued a royal decree calling on weavers to invent a fabric that was transparent, yet concealed the wearer’s face. The wedding was postponed until the perfect textile was found — and it was the town of Tulle that delivered. This moment marked the beginning of tulle's story.
Over time, tulle became a beloved material in fashion, weddings, and home decor thanks to its versatility and light, elegant appearance.

What Are Veils Made Of?

Modern veils can be made from various fibers:
  • Cotton – breathable and soft
  • Linen – natural and durable
  • Silk – luxurious and fluid
  • Wool – warm and soft
  • Synthetics – practical and easy to care for, perfect for curtains and decor

Why Are These Fabrics Still So Popular?

Both tulle and veil fabrics adapt beautifully to different interior styles — from classic to modern. They can be used on their own or layered with heavier fabrics. Their transparency brings light, texture, and softness into the space without visual heaviness.
