Why Fabric Looks Different in the Showroom and at Home

Choosing fabric for curtains, tulle, or other textiles is not just about design — it’s about how the color will look in your own home.
In the showroom, a shade may seem perfect, but at home it can unexpectedly “change” — appearing more yellow, green, or gray. The reason is simple: color is affected by lighting and surrounding colors.

White walls are not always the same

Many people think “white walls” are a universal background. In reality, white can be cool with blue or gray undertones, warm with cream or beige tones, or even have a greenish cast. The difference can be huge, though the eye may not notice it until it’s compared to another color.

Floors, furniture, and details matter too

For example, a wooden floor can have either a warm or cool tone. This affects how fabric is perceived, even if the fabric itself is completely neutral.

How it works in practice

In the first image, we see that next to green tones, black looks like pure black. But when placed against a burgundy background, its true dark green undertone immediately appears.
In the second image, it’s the exact same tulle fabric. On the left, against cool gray tones, it appears yellowish, while on the right, against warm tones, it looks perfectly white.

Why invite a textile decorator

A textile decorator will come to your home with fabric samples and, together with you, see how they look in your lighting and among your interior colors. You make the final choice — but in the real conditions of your home, where you can see exactly how the color will work. This prevents unpleasant surprises and the wrong color choice.
